Dad's in Media Blog-A-Thon

Well... This post is my contribution to Strange Culture's Dad's in Media Blog-A-Thon which is going on from June 12-15.

In thinking about a media father figure that I always looked up I would say that I of two. First is the classic - Leave It To Beaver with Dad - Ward Cleaver

In this show, though classic 50's fare...the Beav's Dad is the consumate father figurethat the Beav could always look up to. There to be both disciplinarian and friend, as well as always having the right thing to say and knowing the exact thing to do to get the Beav out of trouble....or at least would work to make The Beav work it out himself. Real life isn't really anything near this example these days, but it does make me take pause and look at fathers today.... and wonder what I could do to garner the respect and admiration that Ward Cleaver held with his family as well as with his kids' friends. I mean you always knew that the moral was coming when father and son sat down together for a man-to-man talk. I can only hope that someday I will be seen in such a way!

The Second - The Cosby's and amazing Dad - Dr. Huxtable.

The Huxtables were an amazing funny family to welcome into my household. Cosby does a wonderful job at taking heavy or light moments and making them memorable. His overall emotions and facial expressions are priceless and make the show something that I can watch over and over. The one thing I really like about this show and Dr. Huxtable as a father is that he is able to use humor to make his family listen and grow and learn. You also learn aout overcoming adversity within this show much moreso that in the Leave It To Beaver period. Cosby was always willing to take chances and have his on-screen family delve into real-life issues that impacted many families over the years.

So with all of this said and done, what are your favorite on-TV Dads? Who are those you love to hate?

I really admire Ward for never raising his voice but still getting message across.

Also, going to work and doing who knows what.

Ozzie Nelson always bothered me because he washed his car in shirt and tie.

Yeah, how could Ozzie do that...I never could understand that either.... You also make a good point about Ward...what the heck did he do for a living...hmmm.... one of life's big mysteries!

My favorite Dad of all times will always be Andy Griffith. I was always struck by how gentle and patient he was. I liked how he wasn't too proud to admit his own mistakes.
